The joy of sucking at things

I am now officially enrolled in my auto mechanics courses!

I have to start dressing differently, because, once again, I felt a little sheepish in my heels. (I was out running other errands, so don’t laugh at me James.)

It is such a strange departure for me to be enrolling in this program, as I have no mechanical aptitude.  (I had no idea how to open the hood of my car, which I’ve owned for five years.)

I think (because of my mother) I always thought I had to be “The Best” in anything and everything I ever did. Perfect scores, straight As, etc.

Of course, only engaging in things where I excelled seriously limited my potential hobbies.

But, now, having the freedom to engage in lots of things that I totally SUCK AT? That opens up a whole new world! I can do all kinds of new things! I suck at lots of fun things!

Starting with auto mechanics…

I am very excited.

I'm not sure what it means when satire becomes your affirmation.

When an explicit satire becomes a meaningful affirmation

    Hi Jennifer

Ah the perils of a narcissistic mother. Daughters need to be the height of perfection for bragging rights.

Good for you in the mechanics course! That is a big stretch for me too, but I should get something like that under my belt.
At least then I dont’ have to rely on others. (I hate imposing on people).

Im sure you will do great and maybe pass on some tips as you go along???

    :)

You won’t know if you suck at something until you give it a shot. Who knows, you may have an impressive aptitude for understanding how mechanical things work. I guess we’ll all find out with you, eh?

    Heh.

    Good luck girl.

You are on your way to becoming a Renaissance Woman….you will know a little about everything! In my family when it takes 4 times longer than it should, and 6 trips to Home Depot to perform a simple repair we call it “The Hockwald Way”….LOL!

What is up with this site? I am posting and it isn’t showing up. Sorry if this is semi-duplicate.

Dear Karyn, More likely, I will be frantically posting for help with my homework! I say you get the book and we study together. ; )

Dear Wade, Previous experience suggests otherwise, but all the more reason to try to learn, right?

Dear Clarke, Thanks for letting me know about “The Hockwald” way. It does make me feel better! Also, I like Renaissance woman better than dilettante, even though I can’t spell either one.

    Thanks!

I can see it now heels and cover-alls and grease under the fingernails, while the guy in the next booth comes over and fixes it for you.
If you scraped that little house down to the wood, it’s going to take several coats to fill the pores.

    Write the book!
    You are a great writer.
    Mechanic? Not so great!

There was a lady OBGYN. Dr. who always wanted to be an auto-mechanic. At age 50 she retired and went to school. The final exam was to take apart a motor properly for 50 points and another 50 points for putting the motor back together properly. Thats 100 points but she received a final score of 200 points. When she asked the Prof about the score he said she was awarded an extra 100 points because she had done the whole procedure thrugh the TAIL PIPE!!!

Dear James, Ha ha… wasn’t sure if you were still reading, but I knew I would catch hell from you on that one. I’ll talk to my brother about the paint. I don’t think we got it smooth enough. He said if we sanded more, then the boards were starting to crack.

Dear Don, I was totally falling for that story until the punchline!!! Thanks for the laugh.

    Dear Japhy,

I’m glad it makes sense! Have you decided to ‘jump’? I know I am not there yet, but love keeping up with your progress…
