Park Yes, Internet No

Hello to everyone. I just spoke to Jennifer (also known as my wife) and after a long, sleepless night at Wal-Mart she made it to Rocky Mountain National Park and finds it beautiful, but also finds that her Internet connection is not working. She’s anxious to update, so if anybody has information on wireless in Estes Park, please post and I’ll convey by phone. Meanwhile, she’s off to hike Bierstadt Lake.

The public library in down town Estes Park has internet access. I use it every summer.

I know that she will enjoy my favorite Bierstadt Lake hike. Know that she will be in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Oops, I forgot. There is a large, famous (but I cannot remember the name) hotel about a block behind the library when she can park the RV.

    Hello David!

There is a Starbucks in Estes Park, near the west end of the main street.

At Starbucks, get a Starbucks Card (gift card, basically) and put some money on it. Then you have to register it online, so this may have a bootstrap problem. But, once you have it registered, you get free WiFi at any Starbucks so long as you have used the card at least once in the past 30 days.

For free WiFi that doesn’t require a pre-registration, most McDonalds stores will do. You can usually pick up their WiFi from the parking lot. There is a McDonald’s somewhere in that area, but I’ve forgotten exactly where.

Either of these suggestions are useful most anywhere, of course, not just Estes Park.

Re-reading my comment I realized that should have said “east end of the main street”.

It’s worth noting that most hotels restrict their WiFi to guests, even if it’s free. I’m actually on free hotel WiFi right now, but it has a password they give you at check-in.

I’ve seen hotel WiFi set up both ways (wide open, and password-protected for guests). The website that I got many of the hotspots on the above list had three categories. Pay, free to patrons, and open/public. I only listed the ones that were open/public. For example, I left off the Starbucks one because it was listed as free to customers. Of course, I have no way of knowing if the information is accurate.

Hey David, when Jennifer gets interwebs again, be sure to tell her to check the weather for the next few days of her trip… I hear Colorado is having some nasty weather all over the place.

These guys are ahead of her, http://olallabay.blogspot.com/ I think in Ketchikan, she should touch base with them if she has questions.
