I’ve done A to B, now just have to get to C!

While Googling for info on driving The Dempster Highway, I wasn’t too happy to read this one. I know it is rough, but he is just trying to be melodramatic, isn’t he?

It could be much more worse. You could have chosen to cross the Darien Gap solo instead. At least the Dempster is paved.

So, I see the article was written in 2003….is it paved now, or still shale?

The guy certainly had fun accentuating the “adventurous” aspects of the drive. My husband and I just did this drive a month ago. It was fabulous! The road is not paved, gravel all the way. But the Canadians really know how to build great gravel roads! We left our fifth wheel trailer in Dawson City and did this drive in our pickup truck, which we had outfitted with 8-ply tires before leaving the “lower 48″ knowing we’d be doing roads like this. We carried 2 spare tires with us. We gassed up at Eagle Plain even though we still had half a tank. We didn’t gas up at McPherson. We gassed up and spent the night in a motel in Inuvik. The next morning we found a flat tire on our truck, got it changed in town, and headed south. We met a couple at the Arctic Circle parking lot who were changing their fourth flat tire on the Dempster (they were also southbound). They had only 4-ply tires on their pickup/camper combo. The scenery was spectacularly gorgeous, we saw 2 grizzlies, we drove 50-55 mph the entire way, and it was completely “uneventful” otherwise. We literally counted cars on our northbound leg and saw 45 the whole 475 miles, so almost one car every 10 miles. It was sunny and 72 degrees when we were there a month ago. A trip well worth it as long as you have good tires! Go for it and enjoy!

Sorry, allow me to correct myself. I know the Dempster is not paved in the sense of them having used asphalt, but it is paved in comparison to the Darien gap. The DG is heavy jungle of high/low grade unpaved terrain.

Sorry to disappoint you, but reports are that the Dempster is beautiful this year. I haven’t heard any stories of flats or broken windshields yet! :D
