Absent

I adopted a family!

I used to hate the holiday season. Like a lot of us, the excessive materialism would leave me feeling more cynical than celebratory.
And (as noted way too many times by me, I promise to stop), I live in a tiny house. I have no space for extra coffee mugs, candle holders, and the novelty picture [...]

Bob

In 2006, I returned to Austin to work with my beloved academic mentor, Bob Solomon.
In 2007, while changing plans in the Zurich Airport, Bob unexpectedly died.
His life and death had a profound impact on people around the world.
Here is an excerpt of his philosophy (from his cameo appearance in The Waking Life) that many found [...]

Getting too excited

I have so many things that I am excited about that I can hardly keep track.  So, in chronological order, the things I am looking forward to:
1) Lisiting my house:  About 90 days
2) Starting my Auto Mechanics Course:  About 3 months and 5 days
3) Moving into my RV:  About 5-7 months.
4) Leaving for Arctic Ocean/Alaska:  [...]

The deal with my (seemingly absent) husband

I have been blogging about my travels and plans for travels, finances and plans for finances, et cetera, all without seemingly appropriate references to how/where/when/what my husband and partner is going to do.
David, my much beloved husband, is a teacher, writer, business expert, and novelist. He is also somewhat of a recluse. So, my husband [...]

Vicariously living through other women’s adventures

If  you are home,  bored,  and drinking that third glass of wine, I recommend you check out photographer Sandy Wheaton’s Route 66 blog.
http://pictureroute66.com/
Sandy is driving the entire length of historic route 66 and capturing some pretty amazing photographs as she goes along. Oh, and she is doing it while camping in a (bathroom-less) Aliner trailer [...]

Arctic Ocean itinerary

After an obsessive weekend of research, I now have a very detailed itinerary on how I will drive to the Arctic Ocean for summer solstice.
It is actually not that complicated! I would drive across the US to visit Yellowstone, then to Glacier National Park, then into Alberta, Canada, across British Columbia (where I pick up [...]

The Road to Inuvik

My Milepost arrived in the mail today! The Milepost is an annually updated publication on driving the Alaskan Canadian highway, popularly referred to (well, by the few that might refer to it) as the Alcan. It is still an ambitious longshot for me, but I am up studying the suggested itineraries.
Fairbanks, Alaska is about 500 [...]

What to do until then

I feel TRAPPED in my house. My cute little bungalow, that I love, feels like a prison. I want to drive away.  But I can’t, just yet.
So, to feel like I am still working toward my simpler life on the road, I’ve decided to beef up my knowledge on related topics . Since I know [...]

I found my husband!

Grand Canyon kicks my ass, but I’ll be back

I made it to the Grand Canyon! The drive in was beautiful and strange. As I rounded the curvy road and got closer to the North Rim, I drove through acres and acres of burned forest.

It turns out it was a controlled burn intended for the health of the Kaibab forest, but still offers up [...]

One more on Zion National Park

In my relief, I didn’t get to post about the real beauty and majesty of Zion National Park.  What is so extraordinary is the height of the sandstone structures. You can’t appreciate the scale in most photos, but these should help. This is the same photo, cropped down three times, to show you the rock [...]

Zion National Park Tunnel

You used to only be able to enter Zion National Park from the west, but in 1922 they blasted their way through the sandstone to create an eastern entrance.  At the time, it was the most expensive mile of road ever developed in the United States – $2 million dollars, on the eve of the [...]

Tonight, I sleep outside.

I am on my way to Bryce Canyon to check in to my campground.  Lows will be in the 40s. I am not sure I will have Internet or phone service for a few days.
I cannot believe I thought this was a good idea.  I do have an emergency bottle of wine. Thank god.

One day, four states

In the interest of updating my blog, I am going to seriously lower the standard of writing.  Trying to write after eleven hours of driving is tough. BUT, today’s drive was unbelievable.
I woke up really early, so was on the road before six. I know the Texas panhandle is not celebrated for it’s beauty, but [...]
